Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice When It Comes to God’s Calling: What We Can Learn from Abraham

Remember in the Bible when God tested Abraham?

In Genesis 22:1-2 it says…. Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

I don’t know about you but every time I read that story I think to myself “What would I do in that situation? Would I obey? Would I have truly trusted God in that moment?

I’ll be honest I don’t think I could have. But then I have the thought “Well if I knew it was God telling me to do it then maybe I would be able to follow through.”

This got me thinking about all the times God has asked me to do something and I didn’t.

How many times has God asked you to do something and too didn’t follow through?

If you have been listening to my podcast for a while then you may know that I graduated from a Christian Speakers Bootcamp in I want to say January but maybe it was December. I’m not sure to be honest.

Anyway when I graduated I just knew I was going to be on the phone booking gigs right away. After all, deep down inside I have always felt led to be a Motivational Speaker.

Not to mention I’m not scared of making the calls. Back when I sold insurance I would make 250 calls a day.

I’ve even had the thought many times that selling insurance was God’s way of preparing me for this moment in my life.

Yet for some crazy reason or another I find myself freezing and coincidentally on purpose finding others things to do when it comes time to make the calls.

Here it is February and I have yet to book one speaking gig. Truth be told I have no one to blame but myself.

Because I have not been obedient to God and taken time out of my so called busy days to do what He is asking me to do, I have sacrificed a lot.

I’ve sacrificed encouraging someone somewhere to apply for that promotion God is leading to them to.

I’ve sacrificed inspiring someone to go into office and make a difference… before it’s too late.

I’ve sacrificed motivating someone to step out in Faith and start that business they have always dreamed of.

See, a lot is at stake when we aren’t being obedient to God’s Calling.

It just so happens you are actually sacrificing things in your own life too.

For me it has been my health, patience, time, my bank account, and even my relationships.

Because I haven’t been obedient and making the calls that I feel God is telling me to make, instead I find other things to do.

Things that don’t bring in an income which then forces me to Uber in the early morning hours to cover any bills that went unpaid.

Unfortunately, we racked up a lot of debt from unexpected expenses and some really bad decisions.

But get this…. I complain about Ubering the whole time I do it! I tell God how much I hate it. All two to three hours of it.

Then I get a ride and I tell Him how grateful I am and that He always provides.

Then I go right back to complaining about how much I hate it. True story.

The really hard part to swallow is if I would just take the time to commit to making the calls I wouldn’t have to Uber anymore to pay off our debts.

In fact I would have time to workout, my patience would no longer be hanging off the side of a cliff, and I would have more time to do the things I love like getting lost in a good book.

Instead of being obedient and trusting that God’s way is better I always tend to take my own path and try my way first.

However, it is in the mess of things that I learn to be obedient even when I don’t want to be.

What is for you? What are you sacrificing in your own life?

Is it a better paying job? Maybe it’s more time with your loved ones. Or maybe you are like me and you are sacrificing your dream.

A dream that God laid on your heart.

Sometimes like now, I find myself needing to go back and re-read the story of Abraham. The part specifically where God asked him to sacrifice Isaac.

The reason I go back and read this specific story is because one… Abraham said “Here I am” when God called his name.

Secondly, Abraham asked no questions. He simply obeyed and trusted God.

He went as far as to actually kill Isaac, his son, when an Angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am” Abraham replied.

Can you imagine God asking you to sacrifice your own child?

Imagine the trust that Abraham had to have. This is the reason I go back and read this story when I find myself not being obedient.

When you aren’t being obedient it simply means you are not trusting God.

I know this because this is my story.

I haven’t made the calls because I have in my mind that it will be a waste of time, who would want me to come to speak to their people, or here is the thought that really holds me back….. It will never work for me.

Which by the way are all lies. Lies that we tell ourselves to keep us comfortable doing something we hate.

The next time you feel God asking you to do something scary that forces you out of your comfort zone try asking Him to help you trust Him like Abraham.

I’m not going to lie, that is a hard prayer to pray because you know God will do it.

The question is do you want to stay where you are or do you want to go where God wants to take you?

As always I will leave you with something to think about: Trust God like Abraham, Fight like David, Believe like Daniel, and Focus like Peter.
