How to Recognize a Vision from God: Avoiding Distractions That Hinder You from God’s Plan

Have you ever wondered if a vision is from God or not? I know I have.

Back in my depression days I would often lay in bed watching Youtube videos of other people’s stories about how they went from nothing to something.

In those moments I would immediately begin to envision myself on a stage.

Although at the time I had no idea what I was on stage talking about or who I was talking to I knew I was there to inspire, encourage, and motivate.

For the longest time I thought it was just me wanting to feel wanted.

That song “I want you to want me. I need you to need me.” just popped in my head. That is exactly how I was feeling.

When I was depressed I would watch a lot of movies about people who went from rags to riches. Or I would read a lot of self-help books.

One time I watched the Pursuit of Happiness with Will Smith 17 times in one week.

Looking back it is so clear how God was working in my life. Even though I was depressed for seven long years, during those seven years God was planting seeds.

Seeds that would grow into a Vision so strong I could no longer ignore it. You could say I had no choice but to recognize the vision God was laying out before me.

It was either coincidence after coincidence or sometimes there was confirmation.

A friend once shared a graphic on Facebook that read coincidences are God’s way of getting our attention. – Frederick Buechner.

I personally believe this to be very true. There have been too many coincidences in my own life to say otherwise.

The same goes for confirmations.

Just a while back I was struggling with whether or not to niche down to coaches. Something about it just didn’t feel right.

I reached out to a friend and shared what was taking up space in my mind and well keeping me distracted.

That same day I got what I believe was my answer which was to stay on the path of helping Christians find and embrace their own unique calling.

Speaking of distractions, it is important that you understand distractions can come in all sorts of ways just like a vision from God can come in different ways.

For example a vision from God is something that is heavy on your heart. Something that just won’t go away even after you pray about it.

I think it is also important to understand you may not always like the vision God puts on your heart. I remember when God told me I would be a coach trainer on my first day of coach certification, I said nope not me.

A year and half later God opened that door and I obediently walked through.

That vision came through a thought and it returned as a thought a year and half later that became extremely persistent.

While my vision of being a Christian Motivational Speaker came as an actual vision in mind. A vision where I was standing on stage looking into an audience of people who hung onto every word I spoke.

Even though I believe this vision was planted in my heart as a young child by God it wasn’t until after my near death experience that I really began to recognize it.

Which makes me believe that God will reveal His Plan in due time. Therefore you can recognize a vision from God by paying attention to coincidences and the confirmations that follow.

Now that we have that out of the way, how do you avoid distractions that could potentially hinder you from God’s Plan?

Honestly I can show you how to set a goal and reach it all day but from personal experience I truly believe you simply must make the choice to trust God.

And you may not like this part but it’s important…. Do the things He asks you to do even when you don’t want to.

In the last episode we talked about how being obedient is better than a sacrifice. We also learned in that episode what we can learn from Abraham.

If you haven’t listened to it yet, go back and listen.

By the way, I am recording this episode right after I recorded that episode.

I am going to go out a limb here and say I made my calls this week! I’m saying that now while I record this episode on Monday because I just happen to be extremely conscientious.

Therefore, it will bother me to no end if this episode releases on Friday,  and I made 0 calls.

The point I’m trying to make here is distractions just like visions come in all sorts of forms.

So speaking of that episode, a distraction for me was needing extra money to pay some bills. Instead of trusting God’s Plan I took it upon myself to fulfill my needs.

Your distraction could be following too many people and trying to do all the things they are doing.

A distraction could be running errands or cleaning the house.

There are so many distractions that can hinder you from God’s Plan. But it is ultimately up to you to avoid them.

So how do you do that?

For starters acknowledge your distractions, and if you aren’t sure what they are, pray and ask God to reveal them to you.

For me I knew using the excuse of needing extra money was a distraction because I’m two months in and have no speaking gigs booked.

Whatever your distractions are, once you are aware of them it will be easier to overcome them. As always I will leave you with something to think about: Distractions will never come from God.
